The evolution of NetEnt's casino games

NetEnt began in Sweden in the 1990s and became one of the best-known online slot studios. In 2020 it was bought by Evolution, the live casino company, and today it runs as one of Evolution's brands.

Its history explains why so many new casinos still list its games: they are tested, familiar and widely licensed.

Slots

Early NetEnt slots copied land-based reels. The studio then made its name with feature-led video slots: Gonzo's Quest introduced the avalanche mechanic and Starburst became one of the most played slots online. Later releases added higher volatility and bigger maximum wins.

Table and live games

NetEnt built RNG roulette, blackjack and baccarat, and ran a live casino studio for some years. After the Evolution deal, live play moved under Evolution's own brand, and NetEnt concentrated on slots.

Progressive jackpots

Mega Fortune and Hall of Gods made NetEnt known for networked jackpots. Mega Fortune paid one of the largest online slot jackpots on record in 2013. The Divine Fortune series continued the line with smaller, more frequent jackpots.

What comes next

Expect more volatile slots, buy-feature options where the law allows them, and closer links with other Evolution studios such as Red Tiger and Big Time Gaming. For a player, the important change is that the same game may run at different RTP versions at different casinos. Our guide to NetEnt games helps you choose.
