What RTP means
RTP is a long-run average, worked out over a huge number of rounds. In a single session your result can be far above or below it. The house edge is the other side: 100% minus the RTP.
At RWF 200 a spin and 500 spins an hour, you bet RWF 100,000 an hour. At 96% RTP the average cost is RWF 4,000 an hour; at 94% it is RWF 6,000.
Finding RTP at a new casino
- Open the game and look for an info, help or paytable button.
- Search the casino's help centre for a page listing RTPs.
- Compare with the studio's own figure: if the casino shows a lower one, it runs a lower version.
RTP of common games
| Game | Typical RTP |
|---|---|
| Blackjack, basic strategy, good rules | About 99.5% |
| Jacks or Better 9/6, perfect play | 99.54% |
| Baccarat, banker | 98.94% |
| European roulette | 97.30% |
| Video slots | 94% to 97%, by version |
| American roulette | 94.74% |
RTP and bonuses
Wagering costs about wagering amount × (100% − RTP). That is why bonus terms often exclude high-RTP games, and why a lower RTP version makes a bonus more expensive to clear.
Myths
- A slot that has not paid for a while is not due to pay.
- Time of day does not change RTP.
- Bet size does not change RTP, except where the rules say so, such as max coins in video poker.
- New casinos do not run higher RTPs as a rule.
RTP and volatility
Volatility describes how results are spread. High volatility slots pay rarely but sometimes big; low volatility slots pay small amounts often. Two slots with the same RTP can feel very different. Choose volatility by your budget: a small budget lasts longer on low volatility games.
